Perhaps the strangest vision of the planet Venus comes from the Thunderbolts Project, a joint study of Comparative Mythology, Cosmology, and Plasma Physics by David Talbott and Wallace Thornhill. This revolutionary synthesis of ancient testimony, high-energy plasma experiments, and space age discoveries suggests that ancient myths and legends have their true origins in extremely violent electrical discharge formations in the heavens.

According to the researchers, the skies above Earth were once immensely different from how they appear today. Planets Saturn, Venus, and Mars were much closer to the Earth and to each other. The planets formed a tight conjunction, a straight line, and passed so close to one another that plasma discharges were created between them. Such monstrous energetics created halos of light — fearsome, crackling nimbuses — in the skies of our far distant ancestors. With such terrifying displays in sight,  might not those ancient men and women interpret them as the actions of the gods?

Images sent back from Venus by the Magellan probe in 1990 show the surface scarred by terrific electrical discharges. Moreover, global evidence from the ancient past points to the unbelievable truth that Venus once behaved more like a comet than a planet!

To understand how Talbott and Thornhill reached their conclusions once must look deeply into the symbology of the ancient world. Globally, mythic symbols repeat endlessly in parallel. Archetypes such as the Terrible Mother Goddess, Warrior King, Dying God, and the Superior Sun God are already present at the dawn of civilization. Symbols such as the Thunderbolt or Heavenly Trident weapons, the Sword of Heaven, Cosmic Flower, and the Pillar or Mountain of Heaven are also present. Near Easterners, Far Easterners, South Americans, North Americans and virtually every other ancient culture reports a lost Paradise or Golden Age. This lost age of gods and wonders was presided over by a superior Sun God/King of the World, a beautiful Mother Goddess, and a warrior hero who was the son of the cosmic parents.

Eventually, the original Sun Ruler departed and an apocalyptic age began. This period of global instability is described as wars between the gods, descent from heavenly grace, and other stories in which the remaining gods fell into chaos, causing global catastrophes. Amazingly, these cataclysmic fears remain in modern humans’ collective unconscious causing persistent anxieties about the end of the world.

I will digress for a moment to add that dystopian stories pluck at these ancient, genetic fears causing a deep, thrilling terror. It’s a cheap thrill, mining an archetypal symbol from the universal structure of the collective unconscious. The next time you read a tale of doomsday take a moment to note what the story is doing to you. Your apparent pleasure might instead be primal terror from a very deep place.

Images that relate to heavenly phenomena, and including archetypical symbolism, were already present in the myths in Sumer, ancient Greece, Rome, China and India. By then, mythic symbols had shifted to include wrathful forms of heavenly rulers,  — terrible goddesses, war-like gods, and dragons.

According to Talbott, these new images can be explained by shifting orientations between the conjuncting planets and the electrical discharges between them. During the time of stability, there was a grand conjunction — a straight-line — between the planets Saturn, Venus, Mars and Earth. Saturn was the mighty “Sun” ruler much larger in the sky than Sol and backdrop to the other conjuncting planets. Visually in front of Saturn was Venus with a cracking nimbus of plasma discharge as a halo, finally red Mars directly in front of Venus looking like the pupil of an eye. Talbott calls this the Polar Configuration. When the planets shifted out of tight alignment, Venus’ heavenly nimbus distorted into new shapes interpreted by the ancients as archetypes such as the Bull of Heaven, the Hand of God, and even Venus’ famous sea shell.
