I recently had the opportunity to appear briefly in a Polish documentary exploring the life and work of illustrator Julian Krupa.
Amazing Story: The Life of Julian Krupa is a serious and carefully constructed film, shaped primarily by the filmmakers’ research and the contributions of Krupa’s family and those who knew his work more closely. It presents a clear sense of how significant his illustrations were within their historical context, and how much of that legacy has remained unknown to non-Polish speakers.
My own participation came as a result of a recent article I wrote about Krupa. I am grateful that the filmmakers reached out and included a short interview as part of their broader effort. It is always striking to see one’s research or commentary placed within a larger documentary framework like this, especially one that is clearly led by archival care and family perspective.
I wanted to acknowledge the film here on the Rocketeer, and to encourage anyone with an interest in illustration history or pulp-era visual culture to watch this fine film on YouTube.
