This is the first landscape I’ve ever done with the oil pastels. It was also my first time trying out Canson Mi-Teintes Touch paper. It’s a sanded paper and I used a sheet of a neutralized purple-color for this painting. The paper was an experiment and I’m not sure I loved the surface. I much prefer Clairefontaine’s Pastelmat. There’s something about Pastelmat’s surface that seems to handle the medium better. I also like velour papers for oil pastels but not for landscapes. Velour creates a blur-effect that’s great for portraits but not needed for landscapes. I’m working on another portrait right now and have put that on velour paper. I’ll talk about that portrait when it’s done.

Hi Jonathan! This was my first landscape painting in oil pastels. Usually I use some type of watermedia: watercolor, gouache, casein, and acrylics. So this was a test to see just how specific I could get with the pastels. So it’s more painterly than photo-realistic, which I like. It was fun,
Beautiful landscapes, Sara. I’ve used Canson Mi-Teintes pastel paper for my oil pastels. While I like the selection of paper colors, I find the oil leaks through when I do a heavy application of oil pastel. Maybe the sanded paper is better. Anyway, I love used the oil pastels. They’re great for landscape and still life.

I have also tried the Mi-Tientes pastel papers as i already use them for colored pencils. I didn’t like the surface with the oil pastels (they didn’t bleed in my case but the tooth wasn’t sufficient.) Canson has another paper called, Mi-Teintes Touch which is much more like Pastel Mat and works quite well. I don’t like it as much as Pastel Mat but it will hold the oil pastels better. You should try it. I also love the velour papers for the oil pastels. Not so much for landscapes but for portraits they’re really nice.
