Lilith Lorraine imagined a future where society could be perfected — but only if individuals temporarily surrendered their free will. In this week’s Rocketeer Podcast I’m talking about Lorraine’s chapbook, “The Brain of the Planet” from 1929. It’s a visionary tale of progress and the price of a perfected society. Socialist utopias may sound good in theory but at the cost of my own free will? I don’t think so! That sounds like the work of a madman to me.

Lilith Lorraine was also a poetess, specializing in science fiction poetry, if you can believe it! Later, she would become better known as a poet than a writer of prose. Here’s one of her poems from the fanzine Fantasy Book in 1948. You’ll also note a poem written by Stanton A. Coblentz, a notable early science fiction writer. Enjoy!
